You can use Network Policy Server (NPS) to perform centralized authentication and authorization of connection requests from users and computers that attempt to connect to your local area network (LAN) through 802.1X authenticating switches. 802.1X authenticating switches provide additional security for your LAN because the switch does not open the port to the network until after NPS performs authentication and verifies that the user is authorized to access the network. Unauthorized users have no network access because unauthorized computers cannot communicate with DHCP servers on the LAN to obtain an IP address.
