This is a 32-bit number expressed in dotted decimal notation that identifies the OSPF area. The area ID does not need to coincide with an IP address or IP network ID. The area ID of 0.0.0.0 is reserved for the backbone. If the area represents a subnetted network, you can use the IP network number of the subnetted network for the area ID.
