A firewall is hardware or software that prevents data packets from entering or leaving a network. To control the flow of traffic, numbered ports in the firewall are opened or closed to specific types of packets. Depending upon which streaming media protocol you want to use to deliver content to clients, you can configure the appropriate control protocol plug-in to use a specific port to make firewall configuration easier. In some scenarios, outbound traffic may be directed to one port in a range of available ports. You can allocate fewer ports within the port range if you want to implement a more stringent security policy.
