With a multicast stream, your streaming media server streams content to a multicast IP address on your multicast-enabled network. Multicast streams are connectionless, so they are similar to a traditional radio or TV station broadcast in that clients receive the same stream by "tuning" to the same IP address (channel). Because there is only one stream from the server regardless of the number of clients receiving the stream, a multicast stream preserves network bandwidth by only requiring the same amount of bandwidth as a single unicast stream containing the same content.
