You can use the Link Table Wizard to conveniently link to one or more tables in an external OLE DB data source. The Link Table Wizard creates a view for each table based on either a Microsoft SQL Server Linked Server or a Transact SQL OLE DB ad hoc connection. A Linked Server provides the most functionality, including data updates if the OLE DB data source allows, and permanently stores the data source connection information in the SQL Server database. This option is dimmed if you aren't a member of either the sysadmin or setupadmin roles. A link to an OLE DB data source using a Transact SQL function creates an ad hoc read-only connection to the external data source.
