Upgrade totals represent the number of Upgrade license types that were not applied toward underlying licenses. An Upgrade license typically provides access to a specific version (for example, SharePoint Server 2010, Exchange Server 2007) and does not guarantee the floating version rights provided by the Upgrade with Maintenance class of license. Some titles may be counted in this column if your inventory includes underlying base licenses that were purchased outside the Volume Licensing channel (such as OEM or retail). If non-Volume Licensing numbers are included in the Upgrade column, you can add the Upgrade column total to the Effective License column total (up to the amount for which proof of underlying licenses exists).
