XSL transforms structured XML results returned by the location into HTML, which is shown in the Search Core Results Web Part. The included default XSL is adequate for most scenarios.  To customize how results, text, and images are displayed in the Search Core Results Web Part, you can edit the default XSL.Properties determine which metadata is returned with each search result. The default list of metadata is adequate for most scenarios. To customize the metadata displayed on a result, edit the list of returned properties and update the XSL to display the new properties.Sample data is used to provide a visual preview of the Search Core Results Web Part when it is edited in a SharePoint Foundation-compatible editor.
