Verify that the SharePoint Server Search service is available in the Services Control Panel (Start > Administrative Tools > Services) and that and that the service is running. If the service does not exist, verify that you have SharePoint Search installed. SharePoint Search is installed with Microsoft SharePoint Server or with any Microsoft Search Server SKU. SharePoint Search is not installed with Microsoft SharePoint Foundation. To install Microsoft Search Server Express, go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=180385. If the service exists and the startup type is set to disabled, it indicates that the Search functionality has not been configured. You cannot start the service if it has not been configured correctly.
