Enabling directory synchronization prepares your system for one-way synchronization of user accounts and e-mail enabled contacts and groups from your local Active Directory to Microsoft Online Services. To begin one-way synchronization, you must install and configure directory synchronization as described on the Directory Synchronization page of the Migration tab.
