Logging

SSMA can generate logging messages to log files for further troubleshooting if necessary. The following parameters are available:
  1. Output directory - The directory where log files will be created (by default, it is C:\\Documents and Settings\\[Current User]\\Application Data\\Microsoft\\SQL Server Migration Assistant\\logs\\). To change it to your home folder, click the Browse and insert alias "<>". This will point to the C:\\Documents and Settings\\[Current User] directory. It is also possible to set any other directory for log files.
  2. Parameters schema - For changing between:
    1. Logging parameters - Shows options available for logging subsystem.
    2. Output redirection parameters - Shows options that can enable or disable output stream redirection to a file.
    3. Error redirection parameters - Shows options that can enable or disable error stream redirection to a file.
If the logging mechanism is turned on, the following parameters are available:
  1. Enable logging - Enable or disable logging subsystem.
  2. File output - File name.
  3. Maximum log file size - If the log file reaches its maximum size, it begin working like a queue: it will add new message to the beginning and remove last message at the end.
  4. Backup index size - The number of backup copies of log files to keep.
  5. Categories - There are different subsystems in SSMA, and logging can be enabled or disabled for each subsystem separately, as well as logging level. We recommend to use the option "WARN" for all subsystems.
